How true is Bank of Dave?
While the broad outlines of the story are true – Dave Fishwick really did set up a new lending company in response to what he perceived to be a broken banking system, and his enormous success is very much real – there are also a number of exaggerations and inventions made for the film.
The film gives a disclaimer at the start saying it is "true(ish)". While the basic story and some of the locations are true (scenes were even filmed in David Fishwick's own home), much of the film is fictional. The rock band Def Leppard did not perform at a fund-raising concert at Turf Moor.
But while the inspiration and some of the locations are true (the movie even filmed in Dave's own home), pretty much anything else major you see in Bank of Dave – such as the schemes by the banking elite to discredit Dave – are fictional.
Telling the true story of how a working-class man and self-made millionaire fought to set up a community bank, Bank of Dave follows Dave Fishwick (Kinnear), who sells vans in Burnley, Lancashire.
That money was never raised and the company is still in the process of getting a banking licence. BSAL returned its first profits within six months of operating, and has since lent millions to its customers, mainly around Lancashire and the North.

(The end credits tell us that the Bank of Dave has lent 30 million quid; all profits go to local charities.) There are some funny moments too, particularly in a courtroom drama sequence set in Burnley magistrates court, when Hugh goes “full Perry Mason”.
British movie Bank of Dave is now streaming on Netflix, and it features a cameo from Sheffield rock legends Def Leppard.
Is the Bank of Dave still trading? Officially, the Bank of Dave does not actually exist. The bank is actually called Burnley Loans and Savings (BSAL), and it's not actually a bank. Dave is still trying to get the company approved as a bank, but it currently existed as a savings and loans company.
Where did Bank of Dave get his money?
The Burnley businessman made his fortune selling minibuses before going on to set up a community bank lending out his own money following the 2008 crash. Burnley Savings and Loans was set up the same year, helping people in the Lancashire town who were struggling to get loans following the banking crisis.
